Abaca stalks at dusk in a Philippine highland plot

TIBAG Origins

Filipino materials, engineered like technical gear. Abaca fiber for structure, natural latex for weather, and a public record of everything we haven't figured out yet.

The premise

A fiber that was already technical.

Abaca was specified for marine rope long before anyone thought about using it for carry. It holds tension, resists salt air, and stands up on its own without a frame sheet. Those are the properties a pack needs.

What it doesn't do well is get wet. Origins is our attempt to solve that with a natural latex coating instead of a bonded plastic film — and to show the work while we're still failing at parts of it.

The concepts

Four studies, none for sale.

Each piece exists to answer a different question about the material. Open any one to read its construction, composition and test status.

Transparency

Honest about an unfinished thing.

What we know

Verified by us, first-hand.

  • Every concept here uses a Philippine-grown abaca shell panel.
  • The weather face is a compounded natural latex coating, applied rather than laminated.
  • Base panels and backing scrim are currently synthetic, for abrasion reasons we haven't solved.

What we don't know yet

Open questions, stated plainly.

  • Final weights, prices and whether any of these reach production.
  • Multi-year wear behaviour under daily Philippine conditions.
  • Whether fiber grade can be held consistent at volume.

What we commit to

How we will report on this.

  • Nothing in Origins is sold, pre-ordered or reserved.
  • Failed tests get published alongside passing ones.
  • No sustainability claim goes out without a source we can name.
