Pathfinder Origins 32L

The Pathfinder silhouette, rebuilt around a Philippine fiber.

Colour: Raw Abaca

Physical samples exist and are being assessed in the workshop. The Pathfinder Origins 32L is part of the TIBAG Origins material study. There is no price, no stock and no release date — and we would rather say that than take a pre-order we can't honour.

Development updates only. This is a demo form — nothing is sent yet.

  • 32L capacity
  • 16" (target) laptop
  • Cabin ready

A direct reinterpretation of the Pathfinder 32L in a woven abaca shell with a natural latex weather face. Same volume, same organisation logic, an entirely different material problem. This is a concept study, not a product.

  • Woven abaca shell with latex-coated weather face
  • Reinforced synthetic base panel for corner abrasion
  • Suspended laptop sleeve carried over from the production Pathfinder
  • Brass-tone hardware selected for humid and salt-air conditions

Built for

Built for the journey.

From terminal queues to trailheads and back to the office on Monday — the Pathfinder Origins 32L is made for the routes that don't run in a straight line.

TIBAG Pathfinder Origins 32L interior laptop compartment

Laptop protection

Suspended, not resting.

The padded sleeve hangs above the base panel so a dropped bag never lands on your device. Built into every pack that carries tech.

TIBAG Pathfinder Origins 32L hardware detail

Hardware

Parts that outlast the bag.

Brass-tone hardware, bar-tacked stress points and heavy-gauge zippers, specified for humidity and salt air.

Anatomy

Every panel has a job.

Material file

A travel pack that starts in a Bicol field.

The Pathfinder Origins exists to answer one question: can a bast fiber grown here carry a loaded 32L pack through a Philippine wet season without turning into a sponge? The second-round prototypes say maybe. The coating is the variable we are still working on.

Panel construction

  1. 01

    Natural latex face

    Weather

Thin coating on the outer face. Sheds rain while keeping the panel flexible.

  2. 02

    Abaca plain weave

    Structure

Load-bearing shell. Provides tensile strength and standing body without a frame sheet.

  3. 03

    Recycled backing scrim

    Stability

Stops the weave racking out of square under uneven load.

  4. 04

    Reinforced synthetic base

    Abrasion

The one part we have not solved in natural fiber. Named here rather than hidden.

Layers are listed outer face first. Bar heights are indicative of relative build-up only — they are not to scale.

Composition

  • Woven abaca shell58%
  • Natural latex coating9%
  • Reinforced synthetic base21%
  • Recycled backing scrim8%
  • Hardware and webbing4%

Indicative shares by weight for the current prototype build. These will change before any production run.

Treatments applied

  • Controlled degumming

Even coating uptake across the panel.

  • High-density weave

Fewer paths for water through the structure.

  • Natural latex coating

Flexible weather face without a bonded plastic film.

Weather behaviour

  • Heavy rain

    Conditional

Coated panels shed rain in internal spray checks. Seams are not sealed.

  • Prolonged sun

    Under assessment

UV ageing of the latex face is still being measured.

  • Sustained humidity

    Under assessment

Closed-storage mould resistance is an open question.

  • Salt air

    Strong

Abaca's marine-cordage history holds up here.

From field to panel

  1. 01

    Harvest

Mature abaca stalks are cut by hand. The plant regenerates from the same root system, so the plot is not replanted each cycle.

    Bicol and Eastern Visayas

  2. 02

    Stripping

Leaf sheaths are stripped to expose the bast fiber. Grade is decided here, by the person holding the knife.

  3. 03

    Spinning

Graded fiber is spun into a yarn consistent enough to weave at a technical density rather than a craft density.

  4. 04

    Weaving

The yarn is woven into a tight plain-weave panel. Density, not decoration, is the target.

  5. 05

    Finishing

Panels are degummed, then coated with the natural latex compound and cured flat.

  6. 06

    Cut and sew

Finished panels are cut, bar-tacked and paired with reinforced synthetic bases in the TIBAG workshop.

Care

  • Brush off dry dirt before it works into the weave.
  • Spot clean with cool water only. No detergent, no machine wash.
  • Air dry in shade.
  • Store dry and loose, never sealed while damp.

What we know

Verified by us, first-hand.

  • The shell panel is woven from Philippine-grown abaca.
  • The weather face is a compounded natural latex coating, not a laminated plastic film.
  • Base panels and backing scrim are currently synthetic for abrasion reasons.

What we don't know yet

Open questions, stated plainly.

  • Multi-year wear behaviour in daily Philippine use.
  • Final weight and price at production volume.
  • Whether fiber grade can be held consistent at scale.

What we commit to

How we will report on this.

  • This is a concept. It is not for sale and has no release date.
  • We publish failed tests alongside passing ones.
  • No sustainability claim goes on this page without a source we can name.
